2017 WesBank South African Car of the Year (COTY) finalists announced

2017 WesBank South African Car of the Year (COTY) finalists announced

The annual WesBank South African Car of the Year (COTY) competition. Loved by some. Hated by others. Probably seen as irrelevant to many. Still, 30 years since the first one was hosted back in 1986 it is an event that continues to rumble on. One that often gives us, the Everyman South African in the street some pretty confusing consumer advice. Especially when a Porsche wins it three times in a row. Or an R864 700 Volvo XC90. Are these really the best cars for your hard-earned money? Maybe in Germany or some other first-world state but certainly not here in a country with a 26.6-percent unemployment rate.

2017 COTY Finalists

But maybe this year will be different. Maybe this year the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) will look beyond their champagne and canapes and actually choose something that Mr or Miss Average can actually afford to park in their garage. Maybe come 15 March 2017 we’ll get real. Looking at the 2017 finalist list below this might actually be possible. Especially if that Mazda CX-3 impresses the jury like it impressed me. – Thomas Falkiner
