Sasol, sponsor of the Global Touring (GTC) Championship, has announced that team racer Hennie Groenewald has stepped down from motor racing.

Groenewald said stepping down from his six–year racing involvement was due to business commitments.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to be associated with Sasol motorsport over the past six racing seasons. Being part of the Sasol racing team was more than just being a racing driver for Sasol, as I got to meet amazing people and staff at all levels of the organization as well as taking part in various activations at Sasol’s head office and forecourts throughout the country.”

Groenewald won his first race under the Sasol brand at Port Elizabeth in 2010.His numerous victories lead to him becoming synonymous with South African motorsport. Among his many achievements, Groenewald also boasted the 2015 Production Car Championship.

“Hennie has been a remarkable ambassador for the Sasol brand over the years. We are proud to have been associated with him. We are saying farewell to one of South Africa’s top motorsport champions with fond memories and we wish him all the best with his business venture,” said Christopher Kabosha, Senior Manager: Marketing and Public Affairs at Sasol Energy.
