Usually the sight of a Nissan Impendulo NV350 is enough to get one’s pulse racing for all the wrong reasons. But for those living with a physical disability the sight of an Impendulo will soon be bringing with it the sweet promise of easy mobility. You see Nissan South Africa has just announced that their popular minibus taxi will now be offered in a special, wheelchair-friendly model. With some of the passenger seats removed and a unique non-slip aluminium floor installed, disabled passengers will now be able to travel unhindered and in comfort.
A specially designed hydraulic lift ensures optimum wheelchair access through the rear door. The converted Impendulo, only released this month, is attracting interest and enquiries from several sectors, including in the Eastern Cape where the vehicle has already been deployed within regional health departments. “There is a definite need for more public transport facilities that cater for people living with physical disabilities,” says Wonga Mesatywa, Director Corporate and General Affairs at Nissan Group of Africa.
