Remember the Citi Golf? Of course you do. It was launched by Volkswagen South Africa back in 1984 as an entry-level alternative to the more expensive Golf II. At first the Citi was only available in red, yellow or blue. But as it grew in popularity and sales increased, Volkswagen started offering it in other colours too.
There were also numerous special editions: Ritz, Blues, Sonic and VeloCiti to name just a few. Overcome by a wave of ’80s nostalgia (or unimaginativeness – we still can’t decide which) Volkswagen has decided to pay homage to this South African legend by launching the new Polo Vivo Citi.
Based on the 1.4i Conceptline and limited to just 2 000 units this special edition is, if you haven’t guessed already, available in the famous red, yellow or blue paint shades native to its ancestors. It also gets contrasting white wheels, side mirrors and Citi decals running down the bottom of the doors. Pricing? You’re looking at R177 300 before options like cruise control, fog lights and electric windows. – Thomas Falkiner
