Volkswagen just went and put the right engine into the wrong car

Volkswagen South Africa today announced that they’re bolting their 81kW/200Nm three-cylinder 1.0TSI engine into the Polo. No. Wrong. Bad decision. Opportunity missed.

What they should be doing is putting this turbocharged motor into the Up! like they do in the UK and Europe and all those other faraway places over the sea. Because then we’d have a proper little modern day successor to the original Golf GTI. Sigh. But they haven’t. Not this time. Not yet. So until they do (and they better!) we’ll just have to settle for this 1.0 TSI Polo R-line.

Your’s for R290 200 (including a three-year/45 000km service plan) it comes, as the name suggests, with a R-Line cosmetic kit as standard. Which means you get sporty front and rear bumpers, sill extensions and 17-inch Serron alloy wheels.

Inside you’ll find a five-inch Composition Colour infotainment system, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, driver fatigue detection plus a pair of sport front seats. Okay, so it’s actually quite a cool little package – once that looks like an unstickered Polo Cup racing car from afar.

But this doesn’t mean, Volkswagen SA, that you’re off the hook. We still want that 1.0TSI Up!, dammit! – Thomas Falkiner
