Smartphone overheating seems to be a legitimate first world problem in 2015. And Chevrolet has decided to combat the plight by devising an ingenious solution. They call it the Active Phone Cooling system and it will be rolled out on the new Malibu and Impala – which are not sold locally.
It will feature on other vehicles in future however and perhaps they might consider including it in the next generation Cruze, which is destined for South Africa. According to Chevrolet, smartphone overheating saps battery life and slows down processing speeds. With Active Phone Cooling, they lay claim to being the first ever manufacturer to offer such a solution.
The system is an additional component to the wireless charging bay function they offer on certain models. It relies on the air-conditioning system, which directs cold air towards the charging bin where the phone rests.
“Innovation doesn’t mean reinventing the wheel,” said Chevrolet engineer Dan Lascu. “Sometimes simplicity offers the most elegant solution to a problem.”
