IGNITION viewers are in for a white knuckle ride as local car tuners take on F1 racing star Mika Salo in an all-South African version of the international hit motor show Test My Ride. After six successful seasons in Finland and two in Germany, Test My Ride now comes to South African shores and the first stop is Killarney International Raceway.

So why shoot in South Africa? Producer, Patrick Walton explains, “The light, the weather, seven or more amazing race tracks and a very large culture of tuners.” He adds that filming a reality series like Test My Ride is not without its risks, “We’re racing cars on a professional track and some of the guys have never done this before.”  The show format is straightforward but makes for exciting viewing. In each episode a local petrolhead puts forward his pride and joy to be judged on performance and appearance. But that’s not all; the drivers themselves are put to the test as they get one chance behind the wheel of their vehicle to beat the lap time posted by Mika.

“Mika doesn’t have it easy, however, with a brand new track and cars that he has never driven before in very tricky conditions,” says local co-host, Ernest Page, himself a racing champion and SA record holder. To add to the tension, Test My Ride was hosted in combination with Killarney’s epic Street2Strip on ‘Fast Fridays’, with hundreds of fans watching the action. One lucky spectator will be strapped into the passenger seat of the champion’s ride before the flying Finn takes to the tarmac for a drag run display of a lifetime.

Test My Ride starts on IGNITION, DStv channel 189 on the weekend of 9 and 10 April and will broadcast at the following times: Saturday 7pm / Sunday 7am / Tuesday 9am & 9pm / Wednesday 6am & 6pm / Thursday 1pm / Friday 3pm
