Will the Hilux ever be dethroned as the nation’s top-selling bakkie nameplate? It doesn’t seem ready to relinquish its title just yet – and Toyota has worked hard to remind everyone of their success with special edition models like the Legend 45 and now, a celebratory Dakar model.
The Hilux Dakar features a two-tone, stainless steel front nudge bar – with unique decals of course. There’s also a tubular styling bar for the load bay and a standard, black tonneau cover. More stainless steel accoutrements feature, with rear step bumpers. It rolls on 17-inch wheels in the same design of those on the Legend’s, albeit these are coated in dark grey. The side mirrors and door handles get glossy finishes too. You can pick between two colours: Glacier White or Chromium Silver. On the inside, it features black leather upholstery with red stitching – as opposed to the silver stitching in the Legend 45.
Apart from all the aesthetic bits, the Hilux Dakar boasts central locking, power windows and mirrors, climate control and colour screen interface which incorporates a reverse camera. In terms of safety, six airbags, anti-lock brakes and electronic brake-force distribution are standard.
Pricing starts at R315 1000 for the single cab 2.7VVTi model, while the double cab 3.0 D4-D 4×4 automatic is the priciest at R532 700. You can also have the Hilux Dakar in Extra Cab guise.
